Light + laughter | A mommy and me shoot | San Francisco

My shoot with Jennifer and her daughter Julia took place a few weeks ago on a beautiful, sunny day — one of those incredible but rare 70 degree days in San Francisco.  We’d agreed the week before to meet at Crissy Field, but the warm weather on the afternoon of our shoot meant that half of San Francisco would be there too.  As expected, the parking situation was pretty grim when we showed up, so off we went in search of an alternate location.  I have to say that I’m so glad the crowds forced us into a plan B. We ended up at one of my favorite places in the Presidio, and the grove of trees where we spent most of our time that afternoon was filled with the most beautiful, filtered light, with not another person in sight…

Julia was amazing to photograph — bright-eyed, curious and full of energy.  And playful too, which is maybe what I loved the most.  In between shots she had us laughing — and perpetually chasing after her :)  In typical 5-year old fashion, there were silly faces and lots of giggles, along with some pine cone throwing, flower picking and bubble chasing — precisely why it felt like an outing with my own kids.

We eventually made it over to Crissy Field, but by then Julia had had just about enough running around — and perhaps more importantly there were also promises of the Lorax movie for her that evening, which she was obviously excited to go see — so after a few last shots on the beach we called it a day.

Here are some of my favorite photos from the session.
