I love it when a kid has some article of clothing that screams their personality — like a rockin’ pair of boots or a quirky hat. (Right now my own kids obsessed with the cowboy boots that my parents found for them from Mexico…I’m a little bit obsessed with them myself. And while they’ve been known to sometimes sport other more questionable looks — Stella’s “Rainbow Brite” period comes to mind — the thing is that when they own their look, they OWN it, and that’s when their personalities shine.) Which is why I’m always thrilled when I get to photograph a kid who feels like getting their style on.
This was the case last weekend, when I met Gillian, Matthew and their daughter Sasha for a photo session in Golden Gate Park. I first stopped by their home, where Sasha was in the final stages of getting ready (hair up in pony tails and sparkles on her eyes “to match mom!”). After giving me a tour of her art wall and fish tank, she grabbed the last few bites of breakfast and then put on the finishing touch to her outfit: a hot pink cape with a huge star on the back. I knew this girl had spunk.
We ended up spending the morning hanging out near Spreckels Lakes, and were joined by Gillian’s mom, Sharon, for part of the shoot. They’re a very, very sweet family, and it was fun spending the morning with them.
And Sasha, of course, rocked the cape — a little superstar indeed :)
